The Anna-Maria and Stephen M. Kellen Fellowship was created to provide professional opportunities in the United States for leading journalists from Berlin. The fellowship is made possible through a generous grant by the Kellen Foundation, set up in honor of the late Mr. Kellen, and has been administered by the New York-based American Council on Germany and the International Center for Journalists since 1997. Mr. Kellen was a native of Berlin and co-chairman of the New York investment firm Arnhold and S. Bleichroeder, Inc.
The fellowship brings journalists to the United States for approximately five weeks. Each program includes an orientation period in Washington, D.C., four weeks of work and study at American news organizations, and a final group session usually in New York. The program covers all transportation and living expenses.
The primary purpose of this program is to acquaint German journalists with the press system in the United States and to provide them with opportunities to pursue individual reporting projects. During the initial phase in Washington, D.C., the journalists receive an orientation on the American media. In addition, meetings with leaders in government and other areas serve to broaden the journalists’ understanding of the American political system. While attached to news organizations, the journalists experience and observe the full range of operations in a newsroom. Following their attachments, the fellows spend a few days in New York City where they are provided with a series of professional appointments tailored to their individual interests.
