"Abused Innocence" film screening reaffirms the importance of quality media

Last Monday, I attended a film screening here in D.C. followed by a panel that included ICFJ’s own Jerri Eddings, a program director who oversees our health and development fellowships in Africa. The film, called “Abused Innocence,” focused on the plight of sexually abused and exploited African children, and on HIV/AIDS.

As 'swine flu' moves south, reporters brace for challenges, unknowns

On June 29, I attended a panel event in Washington, D.C., on "Communicating Pandemic," sponsored by Johns Hopkins University. The roundtable brought together public health experts and journalists to discuss the myriad challenges facing journalists who are covering -- and will cover -- the H1N1, or "swine flu," virus outbreak.

Zimbabwean journalist lauds new media for newsgathering

In Zimbabwe, where the press has traditionally toed the government line, journalists are “using new media to find and tell stories,” Zimbabwean Voice of America reporter Sandra Nyaira told the International Reporting Media Summit at New York City’s UN Plaza on May 15.

The great irony ...

I wish I could have updated this throughout the day (as promised), documenting a vibrant discussion on media and development from a room full of eager and impassioned NGO workers, journalists and humanitarians. But I couldn't. Because -- in the center of the UN hotel, a figurative gateway to the peoples of the world, in a room full of communicators -- there was no Internet.
