This week, CNN fired Middle East Editor Octavia Nasr after 20 years. CNN said her credibility was "compromised" after she posted a tweet sympathizing with the death of Lebanese Shiite Cleric Sayyed Mohammed Hussein Fadlallah.

This week, CNN fired Middle East Editor Octavia Nasr after 20 years. CNN said her credibility was "compromised" after she posted a tweet sympathizing with the death of  Lebanese Shiite Cleric Sayyed Mohammed Hussein Fadlallah. In her tweet, Nasr called Fadlallah "one of Hezbollah's giants I respect a lot."

The tweet caused controversy in many communities that considered Fadlallah a terrorist. In a blog post, Nasr said she respected his advocacy for women's rights. She also said the violent reaction to her post “provides a good lesson on why 140 characters should not be used to comment on controversial or sensitive issues, especially those dealing with the Middle East.”

Three days later, the debate continues. Some applaud CNN for prohibiting journalists from voicing personal opinions. Others criticize the network for overreacting to a minor mistake. Still others say that in the era of social media, journalistic objectivity is a thing of the past.
