Ethnic Media and the Digital Divide: Thursday event

The combination of a star line-up of panelists: Rick Wade, the senior advisor to the Secretary of Commerce; Ivan Roman, the executive director of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists; Joe Torres, of Free Press; and a very sharp moderator, ICFJ President Joyce Barnathan made last night's event fascinating. Panelists discussed how the stimulus package, if done right, should indeed bridge the digital divide by giving bids to small business run by minority groups. It will also help reach out to communities that struggle with access to information.

Debate on Language to Cover Immigrants/Aliens in the U.S. Brings Up Lack of Newsroom Policies

We had a lively debate yesterday afternoon about the language journalists use to cover immigration. One of the most interesting findings from the panel was the lack of clear policies in newsrooms in the U.S. helping journalists to know when it is relevant to identify someone in a story as an immigrant, and what terms to use when a person's legal status is relevant to the story.

Photos from Last Night's Event - Hispanic Communities in a Time of Crisis

We had an outstanding panel discussion last night at the National Press Club. We were very grateful to Armando Guzman of the Fundacion Azteca America and Pilar Marrero of La Opinion for stepping in as outstanding panelists. Congressmen Gonzalez (D-Tx) and Diaz-Balart (R-Fl) were unfortunately called into a vote and could not make the discussion.

Carlos Dada Speaks about Knight International Fellow Tree Elven (in Spanish)

Our panel is going to start in one hour, but before it does, I got a chance to chat with one of our panelists, Carlos Dada. Carlos is an amazing journalism innovator. He founded Latin America's first digital "newspaper" and has done incredible work spreading quality information around El Salvador with limited resources. This year, our Knight International Journalism Fellowships sent Tree Elven to work with Carlos on coming up with ways to make the media outlet more financially successful. She's just been there a couple of months, but Carlos is already seeing results. In this video he talks about how her strategic business eye is giving the journalists in his newsroom great new ideas on how to do their jobs more effectively.
