China’s Education Minister Zhou Ji visited the Global Business Journalism Program at Tsinghua University on July 7 and singled out the school for “playing a leading role” in journalism education.

In a roundtable discussion with journalism faculty and students, Zhou said that Tsinghua “set a good example for other Chinese universities. I am proud of your achievements.” He noted that journalism was undergoing a “structural change” as China moved to a knowledge-based society. “The rapid development of China’s modernization demands a fast development of the journalism industry,” he said.

The Global Business Journalism Program, launched in cooperation with the International Center for Journalists, is a master’s degree program designed to create a cadre of top-notch business reporters and editors, who can produce clear, balanced and insightful coverage of China’s markets and the global economy. The Minister singled out the school for its “emphasis on hands-on teaching.” Top sponsors are Merrill Lynch, the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu, and Bloomberg.

To show its commitment to the program, Tsinghua University officials also announced full scholarships worth two million yuan (USD$293,000) for the 15 Chinese students enrolled in the program, as well as for 15 international students. The incoming class of international students comes from countries as diverse as North Korea, Israel, Mongolia and Pakistan.
