Knight International Journalism Fellowships: Community Journalism in Russia

Knight International Fellow Eric Schwartz is working with journalists at the Moi Rayon newspapers in Moscow and St. Petersburg to improve reporting on critical community issues, including the country's upcoming presidential elections in March.

 

AZAJA - Azerbaijan

The project’s goal is to improve the standards of journalism in Azerbaijan by providing interested journalists with practical skills and in depth investigative reporting training. As part of the program, journalists will produce several stories for publication and/or broadcast during the four months of intensive training. Their final stories will be well-researched investigative pieces. The one year program includes a total of three, four month training programs and will ultimately train 24 journalists in both print and media skills.

 

Armenian School of Journalism

The Armenian School of Journalism, a two-year international master's degree program at Yerevan State University, aims to promote free, independent and professional media in Armenia through quality Western-style educational and training programs in journalism and media management. Students are being trained to assume news and management positions at newspapers, news agencies, broadcast outlets and Web-based publications. The journalism faculty and curriculum are provided by the International Center for Journalists with cooperation from Louisiana State University and Kent State University. The program is funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID).

 

Caucasus School of Journalism and Media Management

The International Center for Journalists (ICFJ), and its partner organization in the Caucasus -- the Georgian Institute of Public Affairs (GIPA) administer a two-year Master's-level certificate program at the Caucasus School of Journalism and Media Management.  The overall goal of the graduate-level program is to strengthen the role of independent media in the emerging democratic societies of the Caucasus.

 

International Journalism Exchange

Deadline: June 1
Ten foreign editors spend five weeks in the United States learning best practices in editing, newspaper management, business models and other key topics every year in October and November. The program includes a five-day course in Washington, D.C., a month-long newsroom attachment and three days in New York City.

 

Scripps Howard Semester in Washington Internship Program

Deadlines: October 1, March 1 and June 1
ICFJ brings three journalism students per year to participate in the Scripps Howard Semester in Washington internship program. ICFJ brings one student to Washington for the spring, summer and fall sessions.

Covering Conservation: From Poaching to Pollution. Armenian and Georgian journalists gathered in Borjomi, Georgia, May 1-4 to debate, study and hone their skills for covering conservation of biological diversity in the Caucasus region. Read more >>

Central Asia Media and Information Initiative

December 2004 - October 2007
This program will conduct professional skills journalism and management training for media professionals from print publications and news agencies in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan. The training will be aimed at helping journalists, editors and managers navigate the difficult terrain they face in their region. The focus will be on helping the media gain credibility with the public, despite the hurdles of state control and weak economies.

 

Russian Independent Print Media Program (RIPMP)

December 2004 - September 2007
ICFJ worked with the Eurasia Foundation in an effort to prepare native media trainers for Russia in management, sales and editorial operations.

 

2006 Media Training Program for Media Professionals from the Balkans

January - April 2006
A U.S.-based professional development program for 20 journalists from the Balkan region held January to April 2006, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State to help journalists and managers cope with government, business and audience pressures.
