For decades, the International Center for Journalists’ International Journalism Exchange has brought experienced newspaper, broadcast or online editors from the developing world to the U.S. to observe how media are managed here.
2007 IJE Fellows at the White House

From left to right: Joseph Raj of Malaysia, Christopher Gumunyu of Zimbabwe, Ramy Mansour of Syria, Ana Marie Pamintuan of the Philippines, Malkhaz Gagua of Georgia, Barbara Kaija of Uganda, Vitali Lipik of Belarus, Cheryl Springer of Guyana, Mark Oloo of Kenya, Evangelina Hernandez Duarte of Mexico, Anton Kazarin of Russia, and Basil Okoor of Jordan.

Participants take part in a week-long orientation in Washington, D.C. where they attend seminars and workshops conducted by seasoned media executives, practitioners, and other experts, visit major U.S. newsrooms such as The Washington Post and USA Today, observe press-government relations, and learn about the fundamental principles and current trends of U.S. journalism. This year’s program—coming amid turmoil in the news industry—will focus on how news and information businesses are expanding their products with digital media. After their Washington orientation, the visitors will head to different parts of the country to work at news organizations that are building up their digital media presence. There, the visitors spend two weeks to gain hands-on, all-around knowledge and experience of U.S. newsroom operation and management, as well as exposure to the social and cultural life in a U.S. community. The visiting participants will reconvene in New York City, where the program concludes with a debriefing and evaluation. In addition, participants will visit major media organizations such as The New York Times and the Associated Press, and experience the vibrancy and cultural richness of the city.

I personally and professionally have benefitted immensely from the fellowship. The exposure will greatly impact on The New Vision and the Ugandan journalism...I was impressed by the attention to detail in organization and implementation. Also, the exposure was professionally enriching.
