U.S.-Austrian Journalism Exchange Fellowships
 |
| (2009 fellows; from left to right: Ben Cannon, Anna-Katharina Laggner, Stefan Jaeger, Andrew Horansky, and Konstanze Walther) |
Up to six outstanding media professionals from the United States and Austria are awarded an opportunity to report from and travel in each other's countries as part of the U.S.-Austrian Journalism Fellowships. The program offers young print and broadcast journalists from each country the opportunity to share professional expertise with their colleagues across the Atlantic while working as "foreign correspondents" for their hometown news organizations. The program aims to foster greater understanding and knowledge of both countries among future media leaders and their audiences.
"For journalists, who mold public opinion, an exchange program of this kind is particularly useful. There is no better way to overcome stereotypes and really get to know a country," said Susan McCaw, former U.S. Ambassador to Austria.

ICFJ is saddened by the recent loss of our dear colleague, Dr. Meinrad Rahofer, Austria’s heart and soul of quality journalism training, and co-founder of the U.S.-Austrian Journalism Exchange Fellowship program.
Rahofer, who was director of the Salzburg-based Austrian Media Academy (Kuratorium für Journalistenausbildung - KfJ), passed away on Feb. 12 after a short, but severe illness at the age of 54. He is survived by his nine-year-old daughter.

“I was not a guest on the sidelines looking over the fence, but I was part of the team. “I was incredibly lucky to being able to cover the election campaign up-close and personal. I went to stump speeches by Barack Obama, John McCain and Sarah Palin, and I wrote a story for SN about a Joe Biden event in Pennsylvania. Furthermore, I was able to compare how those rallies were covered by the Inquirer and other U.S. media in print and online.”
2008 Fellow Lisa Helmreich, Salzburger Nachrichten (hosted by the Philadelphia Inquirer)
