Join the Debate
Join thousands of journalists worldwide on ICFJ's International Journalists Network (IJNet). Take part in our many active discussions, including "High-risk journalism: How can journalists prepare?" and "Journalists at big events: There for entertainment, or just doing their job?" You will need to register and create a profile in order to participate in IJNet discussions. Since we launched a redesigned IJNet site a few weeks ago, hundreds of you have already created profiles. Our 2007 Knight International Journalism Award winner Wael Abbas is setting the standard for blogging in Egypt. Abbas posted startling videos of police brutality that led to arrests and jail sentences for the offenders.

In a podcast, he discusses the impact he and fellow bloggers are having in a country that continues to crack down on the media.

Marta Gleich, the editor in chief of Brazil's media group Zero Hora, recently launched one of the region's first digitally integrated newsrooms. She started the process in 2004 when she was a fellow on ICFJ's International Journalism Exchange Fellowship. She officially integrated her newsroom in December and her group is thriving. She's hiring new staff, attaining new subscriptions and increasing audience satisfaction. Media leaders travel to her newsroom to learn from her example.

Harry SurjadiOn March 17, 2008, a local Indonesian newspaper, Tribun Pekanbaru, launched the country's first environment supplement. The weekly section featured an investigative story uncovering a startling lack of sanitary disposal policies for hospital waste and other breaking stories. The section was a result of Knight International Fellow Harry Surjadi's hands-on work with local journalists.
