ICFJ Offers Online Course in Investigative Journalism for Iraqi Journalists

The International Center for Journalists (ICFJ) is currently running a new online course in investigative journalists in Arabic for Iraqi journalists from central and southern Iraq. The course started on September 28 and will conclude on November 9, 2009.

The six-week course will be led by Hoda Osman, a former field producer at the investigative unit of ABC News in New York. Hoda is also the Vice President of the Arab and Middle Eastern Journalist Association (AMEJA).

Among the topics to be covered during the course: How investigative reporting differs from other types of reporting; how to find story ideas; how to develop sources; the importance of public records for an investigative report and how best to use them; effective Internet research; what is computer-assisted reporting (CAR); how to conduct effective interviews; using undercover reporting; organizing and writing an investigative report; ethical considerations when working on an investigative report.

The course is open to computer-literate Arabic-speaking journalists with at least one year of professional experience. Participants must be willing to spend time reading materials, researching assignments and interacting online with instructors and fellow participants.

Participant Testimonials:
Reza, a participant, says the open interaction amongst colleagues is one of the major strengths of ICFJ's online training program.

"I'm having a blast,” says American journalist Christopher Quinn. “What a great opportunity to have interaction with fellow reporters from around the world."
