National Association of Black Journalists Hall of Fame Luncheon
By Dawn Arteaga on 7/26/2008 10:13 AM
It's Joi-Marie again checking in...I'm sitting at the booth after lunching with the National Association of Black Journalists. What an inspiring event!

At the event, many black journalists who recently passed were honored, including my great aunt Frances Murphy, a columnist for the historic Afro-American newspaper.

Lester Holt, who was supposed to emcee couldn't make it due to the storms, still we had a great replacement (whose name I can't remember; eek!).

At the awards luncheon we honored Nagatha Tonkins, a professor at NC A&T, Evelyn Cunningham, who built a tremendous legacy covering the civil rights movement (she's currently 91 years old!) and Sidney Wright IV, who won the NABJ Student Journalist of the Year, among others.

The lunch reaffirmed the need for black journalists covering issues that others won't and the need for a voice where there is none. I loved it!
