ICFJ President Joyce Barnathan was elected Chair of the International Steering Committee of the Global Forum for Media Development (GFMD) during its world conference in Athens, Greece, last December.
The steering committee will develop strategic priorities for the GFMD, a network of media assistance organizations that train and support news media. The GFMD was launched as a membership network at the World Conference in Athens attended by some 480 participants from over 100 countries. Today the GFMD has 101 member organizations from 70 countries.
For 2009, GFMD has set the following main goals:
- Produce a quarterly intelligence briefing, the GFMD Insider, to provide members with important information on the media development sector, donor trends, managing non-profits, and digital technology.
- Identify and map media development activities to help avoid duplication and foster new partnerships
- Encourage new investment in media development and independent media.
Barnathan was elected to head the panel for three years. Joining her on the steering committee are Vice-Chair Manana Aslamazyan of Internews Europe and Chairman Emeritus David Hoffman of Internews Network. They will advise and assist GFMD Director Bettina Peters, who organized the Athens gathering.
The GFMD Steering Committee, elected in Athens, has 22 members representing the five regions of GFMD – Africa, Asia, Eurasia, Latin America/Carribean and Middle East/North Africa as well as the international caucus. Other members elected include James Deane of BBC World Service Trust, Jesper Hojberg of International Media Support, Roby Alampay, South-East Asia Press Alliance, Jaime Abello Banfi, FNPI.
Much of the discussion at the Athens conference centered on recent trends in international media development. Participants used the interactive GFMD portal www.ijnet.org/gfmd to produce live blogs and share news from the many workshops, keynote speakers, and panel discussions held in Athens.
