 Breakthrough International Journalism:
Egyptian Blogger and Burmese Investigative Reporter

Tell Their Stories

WHO: The 2007 winners of the Knight International Journalism Awards, which honor professionals who have made remarkable contributions to media independence in their regions.

Wael Abbas is an Egyptian citizen journalist and the first blogger to win the Award. His reports on police violence have been picked up by mainstream media and led to the arrest and conviction of some who committed abuses.

May Thingyan Hein is a Burmese investigative reporter. Her hard-hitting reports on poverty, health, the environment and other topics have set a new standard for journalists in a country that severely restricts free expression.

WHAT: Panel discussion and question-and-answer session moderated by Joyce Barnathan, President of the International Center for Journalists.
