Dear ICFJ,

I'm writing on behalf of the media ethics website,
Stinkyjournalism.org. I'm currently working on a story about a freelance journalist who was sent on assignment by Smithsonian Magazine to write about poppy eradication in Afghanistan. While reporting, he was the victim of a suicide bombing and was seriously injured. With shrapnel permanently lodged in his brain, he is dealing with damage that has left him unable to work in the same capacity. He is also dealing with exorbitant medical bills.

The Smithsonian Magazine is refusing to assist with those bills as they claim they are not liable because he was an independent contractor. The journalist, who had worked as a freelance feature writer for the Smithsonian Magazine for about four years, claims that they should have covered him with accident and/or high-risk insurance (which is much more expensive than his fee) because of the nature of his assignment.

I'm looking to speak with someone about the rights and responsibilities of a freelance journalist. Are they entitled to expect emergency or accident insurance coverage even though they are not salaried employees? What are their responsibilities in regards to ensuring that they are covered? Is there a standard of care that is provided by publications that journalists can assume will be provided?

It would also be great if you know of a freelance writer who has been in a similar situation (injured on a high-risk freelance assignment) but was

Dear ICFJ,

I am a student in the Mass Communication Department at the University of Sindh, Jamshoro in Pakistan. I am conducting research on the role of print media in covering and highlighting environmental issues.

I need a review of literature about the role of print media in covering and  highlighting environmental issues. My specific questions are: Can media really play any role? How much are environment issues covered? In their coverage, are they effective or beneficial in stopping the deteriorating environment? Are media outlets paying proper attention to this issue? What is the position in different countries particularly in Europe, USA, the Americas, Africa, Australia etc.? Is this coverage different in different regions?

Any write-ups, informative articles or reports would be useful.

I will be thankful if you can provide me some material.

Dear ICFJ,

I'm a junior in high school and I am trying to decide what I want to do in the future. I was looking at journalism as one of the options because I like learning about different cultures, conflicts, like the ones in the Middle East and languages. Though, I don't know much about journalism, I was wondering if you could help me out by giving me more details on journalism from all aspects: daily life, how to ascend in the career, how to get started, salaries...

Thank you, and I'd really appreciate it!

Valerie

Dear Sir\Madam,

I am deeply interested in the videos published on ICFJ's website on how to become a better broadcast
journalist. Unfortunately our internet connections in Cameroon are very poor so it takes hours for me to successfully watch a video.

I wish therefore to find out if there are any possibilities of downloading the videos for viewing off line.

Thanks,

Ernest

Hi ICFJ,

My topic is Editorial independence in the Ethiopian private press. What I am looking for is something that serve as a theoretical framework for this topic. (i.e. a paradigm that supports the existence of editorial independence for the good of journalism or media.) So far, i have Googled many times with the key word and I could not even find its definition in detail. I would be so grateful if you could locate any material that can be relevant to the following topics:

1. What types of media ownership exist? Individual, corporate, family owned, journalists owned?
2. Which type of media structure is ideal to guarantee editorial independence?
3. What kind of relationship is preferable to protect the breach of editorial independence?
4. What is editorial independence in the newspaper media? Is it realistic to say that the owner has no say in the content of the paper rather than paying the bill?
