Unit One: Getting the StoryThis manual teaches the basics of reporting, writing, and editing. Each skill plays a role in the composition of accurate, thorough, fair, and timely reports of events. Getting the Story features a young reporter on a daily newspaper, but the process is generally the same for all forms of news media – newspapers, radio television and news magazines. The reporter first collects facts and checks them. Then more information is obtained through research. Next, the reporter writes the story. Finally, the story is edited. Urdu ManualAfter he began his Knight International Journalism Fellowship with ARY One World, a private, Urdu-language television channel in Pakistan, Adnan Adil Zaidi realized the need for an Urdu TV production training manual. “There was no book or training manual available in Urdu. Even books on media training in the English language are not available,” Zaidi says. The challenge was to develop a document that addressed the basic training needs of television journalists in Pakistan. Zaidi developed the guide using notes he had taken during his 18-year journalism career. The result: a 108-page manual that covers news theory, television reporting and anchoring.   Read More...

Financial Glossary coverMerrill Lynch, in conjunction with Tsinghua University, has published a Glossary of Financial Terms and Acronyms, a valuable new tool for business journalists and students covering the global economy.

English financial terms are often translated into a confusing array of phrases in Chinese. This glossary will enable Chinese and American business executives and reporters to use the same language.
