A native of Uruguay, Fernandez worked as a reporter for the national daily newspaper El Observador and for its website, Elobservador.com.uy. She has a M.J. in multimedia journalism from the University of Maryland and a B.A. in journalism from ORT University in Uruguay. She's bilingual in English and Spanish and has a basic knowledge of Portuguese and Italian.
