For Reporters and Editors from Spanish-language media

(travel, lodging and expenses covered by the program)

en Español

In parts of California, especially some Hispanic neighborhoods, air pollution is one of the leading causes of sickness and death. Yet a smog of complexity cloaks this story.

Get the story!

Get hard news stories and learn how to cover the issue in your community, whether it is near industry, a port or in the San Joaquin Valley. This workshop will present leading experts on the problem in a forum designed for California journalists who speak Spanish. Some presentations and training materials will be in Spanish.

Who: Top community activists, scientists, air regulators and journalists
What: News conferences, briefings and training on how to cover air quality
When: Nov. 18-19, 2005
(Registration for hotel guests opens Thursday evening, Nov. 17)
Where: Renaissance Long Beach Hotel, Long Beach, CA

Speakers will include:

Alan Lloyd, Secretary of the California State EPA
Ingrid Lobet, radio reporter, Living on Earth
Rey León & Jesse Marquez, community leaders
S. David Freeman, Chairman of the Port of Los Angeles

With an emphasis on pollution health effects, emissions from seaports and air quality in the San Joaquin Valley.

Organized by the International Center for Journalists, a Washington, D.C. nonprofit that conducts international exchange programs and training for journalists, and Curtis Moore, editor-publisher of Health & Clean Air Newsletter, with a grant from the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation and assistance from New California Media.
