In Algeria, journalists face challenges to reporting because of government actions
to control the media, such as arrests of journalists and the shutting down of news
organizations. This workshop was aimed at giving Algerian journalists the training
necessary to strengthen their reporting and their news organizations, and included
training in Algiers, Algeria and in participants' individual newsrooms.
The workshop offered journalists training in investigative reporting and coverage of
human right issues in Algeria. It included discussions on the rule of law, human
rights and media law in the country. Also offered were special sessions on how to
conduct training in the newsroom and how to foster better in-depth coverage of human
rights and rule of law issues. Additionally, special attention was devoted to the
importance of journalistic ethics and their relation to Algerian media laws.
The program was part of a program led by Freedom House "On Strengthening Rule of Law
and Human Rights in Algeria" and was funded by the United States Agency for
International Development (USAID). ICFJ's Algerian partners are two Algiers-based
newspapers, El Khabar and El Watan.
