Pakistan: Introducing Immersive, Data-Driven Storytelling and Launching News Innovation Teams

Shaheryar Popalzai is an ICFJ Knight Fellow transforming the way Pakistani newsrooms use the latest technologies to make their reporting more immersive and engaging, and building teams that can sustain that innovation. He has helped major newsrooms pioneer the use of 360͒ video and Facebook Live, and produce data-driven stories that have garnered international recognition.

Popalzai started his fellowship working with The Express Tribune to help them reboot their Labs team with the goal of being an innovation engine for the news organization.

Women in the developing world face even greater challenges than their developed-world counterparts breaking into IT and taking leadership roles in the field – especially when it comes to news media. Chicas Poderosas is addressing this challenge by helping to bring Latina women in the Americas into the forefront of digital journalism.

Chicas Poderosas, a movement started by Mariana Santos during her ICFJ Knight Fellowship, provides digital and new media skills and leadership training to women across Latin America.

InnovateAFRICA: Digital Fact-checking and Watchdog Projects Win $1 Million

A pan-African fact-checking network, citizen science in Durban shantytowns and a graphic journalism hub are among the latest winners of seed grants from innovateAFRICA, the continent’s largest fund for digital journalism experimentation.

The 22 winning digital projects will receive $1 million in funding and technology support from innovateAFRICA, which is managed by Code for Africa as part of ICFJ's wider data journalism initiative in the region.
