South Africa: Create Multimedia Health Coverage

In South Africa, where AIDS and tuberculosis continue to cripple the population, Knight Health Journalism Fellow Brenda Wilson has expanded multimedia health coverage at the country’s largest broadcaster, the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC). She has dramatically increased coverage of health from its network of provincial bureaus.

We designed this manual to help journalists to better cover these kinds of issues, to elevate the beats that revolve around daily life to the same level of the politics, crime or entertainment beats. We have chosen to call these social issues because they deal with the way people in society interact with each other. Besides being neglected at many news organizations around the world, social issues involve special reporting challenges. Many of the issues are controversial or sensitive topics that some people would rather not discuss.

A Health Section Debuts in Nigerian Newspaper

Fourteen weeks after I began my fellowship at the Daily Trust in Abuja, Nigeria, a new health section called Health Insight debuted on Tuesday, August 16, 2011. The launch of the new section, which is one of the two major components of my fellowship, was made possible through the support of the Daily Trust senior editorial staff, but more importantly, the seven journalists on the new health team I am building.

In Zambia, a Hidden Health Crisis Comes Out of the Shadows

Participants at a three-day workshop on the dangers of smoking were shocked into silence as medical doctors, academics and activists churned out statistics and evidence showing how tobacco use has become the largest cause of preventable deaths in the world. They also heard that cigarettes were more addictive than cocaine.
