ICFJ Launches the First-ever Journalism Style Guide for Timorese Journalists

Sep 202010

Timorese journalists can now turn to a new book when they are stumped on how to spell a particular word or need to know the precise spelling of a place or organization. ICFJ launched the new book, titled “Mata Dalan Ba Journalista Sira” or Guide for Journalists on Tuesday, May 25.

It was three years in the making and ICFJ collaborated with local journalists, journalism associations and the National Institute of Linguistics in developing the 72-page book.

More than 40 people, mostly journalists, took part in the launch of the book – including representatives from AusAID and USAID – ICFJ’s donors.

USAID’s Jerry Boavida encouraged journalists to use the book – adding that it was yet another tool to help reporters to do a better job covering the news.

The style guide aims to help journalists write and produce their stories using standardized Tetun developed using the Banati system – established by the National Institute of Linguistics.

The book was published as part of ICFJ’s five year, five million dollar Strengthening Independent Media program – jointly funded by USAID and AusAID.
