2013 International Reporting Fellows to Focus on Key Social Issues

The International Center for Journalists (ICFJ) has selected 14 participants from the United States to report on everything from immigration to women’s health in the 2013 Bringing Home the World: International Reporting Fellowship Program for Minority Journalists. ICFJ also selected six U.S. journalists as fellows for the inaugural Social Justice Reporting for a Global America Program.

The fellows were chosen from a record 200 applications based on the quality of their proposals. Participants will report from abroad on issues that resonate with their local audiences.

WASHINGTON—From digitally mapping Amazon deforestation to launching a news innovation challenge in Africa, innovative work by the International Center for Journalists (ICFJ) will be supported by a new $3.15 million grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.

Tackling the Challenges of a Thriving, Free Press in Haiti

GlobalPost's GroundTruth blog featured the work of Knight International Journalism Fellow Kathie Klarreich, working in Haiti to build a network of trained investigative journalists. It details the many, many challenges journalists in that country face, not the least of which includes newsrooms that still have not recovered from the devastation of the January 2010.

Senegal: Shedding Light on Poverty Issues

Manuela Huyghues Despointes, a French journalist with extensive experience in Francophone Africa, is working with the daily newspaper L’Observateur and its sister radio station RFM, to produce daily coverage of poverty-related issues that receive scant media attention.

Recent stories focused on high health-care costs at public hospitals, coastal erosion threatening to displaced residents, and a heavily polluted canal in the middle of the capital.

ICFJ now accepting applications for 2012 International Reporting Fellowship Program

For a second year, the International Center for Journalists (ICFJ) will offer the “Bringing Home the World: International Reporting Fellowship Program for Minority Journalists.”

Through this fellowship, journalists of color gain foreign reporting experience and an opportunity to cover important international issues that resonate with their communities.

Applicants must present a project proposal in their application, detailing the reporting project they would be interested in pursuing.

The deadline for submitting applications is Monday January 16, 2012.
