Knight International Journalism Fellowships
South Africa: Create Multimedia Health Coverage
Knight Felllow Brenda Wilson is launching multimedia health programs in Johannesburg, South Africa, reaching a young, tech-savvy population that is particularly vulnerable to illness.
In South Africa, where AIDS and tuberculosis continue to cripple the population, Knight Health Journalism Fellow Brenda Wilson has expanded multimedia health coverage at the country’s largest broadcaster, the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC). She has dramatically increased coverage of health from its network of provincial bureaus. She also is working with a team of reporters to improve health stories produced by Health-e, a nonprofit service that provides health news and analysis for print and electronic media outlets across the country.
Wilson has helped nearly three dozen journalists at SABC’s headquarters in Johannesburg and its regional bureaus across the country to produce stories that shed light on a wide range of health issues, including AIDS, tuberculosis, rural health services and new government health insurance policies. She also is creating training manuals and assembling a database of health experts that will remain as a resource for journalists after her fellowship ends.
