SXSW and ICFJ: Eye-Catching Technologies Help Media Engage and Track Information

I attended this year’s South By Southwest Interactive Festival (SXSWi) to interact with industry leaders and explore interactive technologies we could use to help people in developing countries access and share information in new ways.

For the unfamiliar, SXSWi is a five-day extravaganza of panels, parties, free food, meetings planned and moments serendipitous, accelerators, keynotes and one massive tech trade show. Few events bring together such an amazing array of mobile and digital thinkers and innovators.

McGraw-Hill Markets Reporting Program

The International Center for Journalists (ICFJ) offered two online courses in English and Spanish on intriguing topics such as how to plan for retirement, understanding your 401(k), stock and bond markets, mutual funds and private and public companies. These courses were available to U.S. journalists who reported in minority communities. The online courses took place from October 22, 2012 through December 16, 2012. All applicants were asked to propose a project that they developed throughout the length of the course.

'Pakistan is Much More than Osama bin Laden'

Gharida Farooqi, a broadcast reporter from Pakistan, told KSTP-TV in Minneapolis that her country is more complex and dynamic than most Americans understand. Farooqi is participating in the U.S.-Pakistan Professional Partnership in Journalism, a program run by ICFJ designed to dispel myths and build partnerships.

In this 18-minute web chat, she addresses everything from hockey to gay rights.

Hacking Into a Data Journalism Revolution

We are on the verge of a data-journalism revolution. That was my big take away from the Hacks/Hackers “Python Web Scraping 101 for Journalists” meetup this past weekend in Washington, D.C.

Russia-U.S. Young Media Professionals Exchange Program

The International Center for Journalists (ICFJ) will soon be recruiting American journalists to take part in the second round of a two-year initiative – the “Russia-U.S. Young Media Professionals Exchange Program.” The first round of the month-long exchange took place in Nov./Dec. 2012.

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton praised ICFJ’s award winners for their “unwavering commitment to their profession.” She said that “through their work, (the honorees) have helped shed light on issues that were once hidden in the shadows.”
