Mexican journalists strengthen skills on covering Northwest Mexico
May 4, 2006 - May 6, 2006
Twenty Mexican journalists participated in ICFJ's "Sustainable Development: Coverage of Northwest Mexico" training program in May. The three-day program was designed to give journalists of Northwest Mexico tools to improve coverage of the regional growth in Mexico's northwest states, an area where rapid economic development threatens an already fragile ecosystem.

Coverage of Northwest Mexico
May 4-7, 2006
ICFJ’s upcoming journalism training program, “Coverage of Northwest Mexico,” will help media improve coverage of sustainable development in the Baja Peninsula and the Gulf of California. The seminar will be held in La Paz and Loreto; it will build reporters' capactiy to cover development and conservation in Northwest Mexico.

Bio-diverse Belize
March 3-6, 2006
A three-year series of environmental journalism workshops and prizes for up to 15 Belizean journalists on the coverage of coastal and marine conservation in Belize, with the first-round training workshops scheduled for March 3-6, 2006 in South Water Caye, Belize.

Covering Freedom of Expression: Resources for Journalists
The goal of this three-year initiative is to increase awareness of freedom of expression issues throughout Latin America. ICFJ is conducting a series of workshops in the capital cities of 22 Latin American countries, giving journalists the tools they need to better report on freedom of the press. (Funded by the Robert R. McCormick Tribune Foundation)

Media and Freedom of Expression in the Americas
For this three-year program, ICFJ created a traveling workshop designed to spark discussion among journalists about the principles, practices and current realities of press freedom in the region. Workshops were held in 16 countries from 2000 to 2002 with journalists from 350 Latin American cities. The project culminated in a training video and manual which contain actual case studies from working journalists in the region. The set, also entitled Media and Freedom of Expression in the Americas, is available from ICFJ in Spanish, Portuguese and English. (Funded by the Robert R. McCormick Tribune Foundation)

2005 Mexican Academic Program
Oct. 2-7, 2005
A group of Mexican academics participated in an ICFJ week-long program in Washington, D.C., to learn new trends in journalism teaching and to experience journalism in the US capital.

Scripps Howard Latin American Media Ethics Program
July 23, 2006 - August 3, 2006
Ten Latin American journalists come to Washington for a 10-day program on media ethics. The overall goals of this course are to assist news media and journalists in Latin America to identify common threads of professional behavior, stimulatea dialogue about journalism independence, discuss counry-specific principles of conduct, and encourage participants to reflect on their own personal code of ethics and to continue the discussion about ethics in their own newsrooms.

A series of workshops throughout Latin America in 2003-2005 to improve the media's ability to provide balanced and unbiased information to the public regarding freedom of the press issues.

Douglas Tweedale Memorial Fellowship
October-December, 2005
The Douglas Tweedale Memorial Fellowship was created to ene the professional development of promising Latin American journalists. This year, one journalist will be given the opportunity to further develop his or her journalistic skills by working alongside colleagues in the newsroom of a U.S. newspaper or TV station serving a Hispanic community as well as at a prestigious newspaper or TV station in Latin America.

ICFJ brings three journalism students per year to participate in the Scripps Howard Semester in Washington internship program. ICFJ brings one student to Washington for the spring, summer and fall sessions.

Public Health and Medical Reporting: A Workshop for Latin American Journalists

This program was modeled on the 2003 ICFJ-NIH program for Latin American journalists, and took place in Panama.

Election Coverage in Venezuela
June 8, 2004
A one-day training session for reporters in Caracas on election coverage. The seminar was aimed to prepare journalists to cover an upcoming referendum in the country.

Air Pollution Workshop for Latin America
January 14, 2004 - January 16, 2004
Conduct air pollution workshop for journalists in Mexico City in January, 2004 and a followup conference a year later, possibly via distance learning.

Journalism Ethics
From 1995 to 1998, ICFJ conducted a series of conferences in Latin America to help journalists recognize common threads of professional behavior, reach consensus on principles of conduct where possible, and develop practical methods and resources for ethical decision making. Following up on the conferences, ICFJ produced a training video and handbook set, Journalism Ethics: The New Debate, which contains real-life examples of ethical challenges faced by Latin American journalists. The video and handbook are available in Spanish, Portuguese and English. (Funded by the Robert R. McCormick Tribune Foundation)
