Tropical Forestry Workshop for Journalists Is Scheduled in Quintana Roo in July
en Español: Taller en Chetumal sobre la Conservación de Bosques Tropicales

The International Center for Journalists (ICFJ) held a tropical forestry workshop for Mexican journalists July 24 to 27, 2003, in Quintana Roo.

Approximately 16 journalists met at Los Cocos Hotel in Chetumal for a series of talks and roundtable discussions. From there they took field trips into the forests. The program focused on the conservation of forests through sustainable, long-term management of timber or by exploiting non-timber resources such as ecotourism and tapping trees for chicle. Can such programs continue to keep the forests from being razed?

Participants visited two "ejidos" that participate in the Plan Piloto Forestal, which calls for dedicating large land areas to forestry and managing timber resources in a sustainable manner. They spoke with an ecologist, timber managers, lumber marketers, ecotourism entrepreneurs, government officials and their fellow journalists.

Travel and workshop expenses for the program were paid by its sponsor, the Goldman Fund of San Francisco, California. This was the second of two workshops on forestry in Mexico sponsored by the Goldman Fund. The first took place in Uruapan, Michoacán, in November 2002.
