IJE participant thinks newspapers will survive by exercising community journalism

A year ago, Mexican journalist Evangelina Hernández Duarte gave herself a goal: to get closer to local communities, believing that strong newspapers are the ones that become part of citizen’s every-day lives. A year later, she is more certain of her vision and knows that newspapers will overcome difficult times only if they look at big-news’ impact through the eyes of everyday people.

Knight International Journalism Fellow Arul Louis discusses media and climate change with Dr. R.K. Pachauri, director-general of The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), a New Delhi-based organization that focuses on sustainable development. On Aug. 31, Dr. Pachauri was reelected chairman of the U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. The panel, which Dr. Pachauri has led since 2002, shared the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize with former U.S.

Enrique Flor, a recent participant in the Disaster Coverage program, took what he learned back to his newsroom and was able to bring attention to the similarities between New Orleans hurricane victims and the needs of Florida citizens.
