Of Course We Drive Cars in Pakistan

Jul 142014
  • The 10th group of Pakistani journalists in ICFJ's U.S.-Pakistan Professional Partnership in Journalism program visits the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C.

Last month, 19 journalists from Pakistan returned home after completing three-week fellowships in newsrooms across the United States, bringing the total number of Pakistani journalists to participate in the U.S.-Pakistan Professional Partnership in Journalism to over 140.

From Topeka to Tallahassee, the fellows shadowed reporters and anchors, produced stories for their host media organizations, and experienced American culture at its core - in U.S. communities. For Haroon-Ur-Rasheed Baloch, who completed his fellowship at Wilmington’s WDEL radio station, the difference between Americans on TV and Americans in reality was surprising.

Baloch's mentor, Chris Carl, WDEL director of news and programming and Radio Television Digital News Association chairman, recounts his surprise.

“The version we get [of America] is not very good. But when a journalist comes here, he’ll be surprised and say, ‘Wow. This is not the thing that we have been getting from U.S. films or the media coverage about the United States. Actually, USA is something else," Baloch said.

The misconceptions in Pakistan about the U.S. run in both directions. “Baloch said there is definitely a gap between the two countries and cultures that can be closed through cross-cultural exchange programs. ‘I was asked if we drive cars in Pakistan,’ Baloch said. ‘Of course we do! We’re the seventh nuclear power in the world!’”
