Scholarship students from Tsinghua University’s Global Business Journalism program met recently with Merle A. Hinrichs, the chairman and CEO of Global Sources, and Alex Boome, corporate marketing and communications manager for Global Sources.

Global Sources, a Hong Kong-based media company that focuses on international trade, awards three scholarships each year to students in the GBJ program.

A total of six students, from the classes of 2007 and 2008, are currently receiving the scholarships. Three more will be awarded to the GBJ class of 2009.

The current six scholarship recipients are Anna Zhou Huanyu, Ella Li Ming and Crystal Liu Qi from the class of 2007, and Lily Liu Liqin, Maisie Hu Yao and Michelle Li Xue from the class of 2008. Each scholarship is worth 20,000 RMB ($2,900).

Mr. Hinrichs and Mr. Boome were in Beijing October 22-24 to attend a Forum on Trade, China and the World Economic Order hosted by the Tsinghua International Center for Communication Studies. Dean Li Xiguang of Tsinghua’s School of Journalism and Communication is also president of the communications center.

A number of GBJ students from all three classes attended the closed-door trade forum as observers or served as volunteers.

Several of the scholarship students met informally with Mr. Hinrichs at breakfast, where they discussed the state of e-commerce, the influence of the Internet on media and business and several other topics.

Two scholarship students from Beijing University’s Beijing International Master’s degree in Business Administration (BIMBA) program, which Global Sources also supports with two scholarships annually, attended the breakfast.
