United Airlines Renews Partnership with International Center for Journalists’ Minority Reporting Program

CHICAGO, June 4, 2014 - United Airlines announced today that it has renewed its partnership with the Washington, D.C.-based International Center for Journalists’ (ICFJ) Bringing Home the World: International Reporting Fellowship Program for Minority Journalists. United will serve as the sponsoring airline for several of the 2014 Fellows.

“United is pleased to again join the ICFJ in providing opportunities for Latino and other U.S. minority journalists to travel to Latin America and the Caribbean for research and reporting projects,” said Maria Cristina Osorio, United’s director - international communications for Latin America. “Latin America is a very important part of United’s global network, and we’re proud to partner with the ICFJ in this program to increase coverage of the region.”

The ICFJ has selected 11 U.S. participants to report on a variety of issues for the 2014 Bringing Home the World program. Prior to the Fellows' overseas travel, ICFJ will hold an intense orientation, June 1-7, 2014, in Washington, D.C., to prepare them for their foreign reporting work.

“United’s generous support for this special program will help these journalists pursue global stories of importance to their local communities,” said ICFJ President Joyce Barnathan.

The 2014 Bringing Home the World Fellows, chosen from 115 applicants for the program, represent a variety of news organizations including NPR, El Nuevo Herald (Miami) and Al Día (Dallas), as well as freelance writers. They will travel to Argentina, Nicaragua, the Dominican Republic and Mexico, among other countries, for their reporting assignments.

United’s partnership also will support the Knight International Journalism Fellowships, ICFJ’s flagship program. Knight Fellows partner with newsrooms, startups and other organizations in Latin America and elsewhere around the world to help them adopt technology that engages and informs the public.

The 2014 fellowship is sponsored by the Ford Foundation with additional funding from the Samuel I. Newhouse Foundation, United Airlines, the Brooks and Joan Fortune Family Foundation and the Scripps Howard Foundation. The airline’s support will be acknowledged at a reception for the participating reporters on June 5 in Washington, D.C.
