2009 Professional Development Program for Serbian Editors

May 25 - June 4, 2009

The International Center for Journalists administered a ten-day professional development program for a group of senior Serbian editors.

Visiting journalists had the unique opportunity to meet with media professionals in the U.S. and participate in in-depth workshops.

The workshops include "What is Unique about the American Media" led by Vice President of Program Patrick Butler. Also, the Editorial Director at the Center for Public Integrity David Kaplan led a workshop entitled "Investigative Reporting: Tools and Techniques from the United States" that gave editors an overview of in-depth reporting techniques.

Along with workshops, visiting journalists met with the nation's top media professionals and think tank experts. Media outlets and other organizations they visited include Voice of America, The Washington Post, The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer, the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, San Francisco Chronicle, Mother Jones, Knight Digital Media Center and YouTube.


2009 Professional Development Program for Serbian Media Managers

June 7 - June 17, 2009

The International Center for Journalists administered a ten-day professional development program for a group of senior Serbian media managers.

Throughout the program, the media managers learned new concepts, strategies and skills for media management and sustainability that will help them maintain independent and economically viable media in Serbia. They attended training seminars on media management and marketing and workshops with top media executives at major U.S. news outlets, such as The Washington Post, USA Today, Los Angeles Times, The Associated Press, Marketplace, Variety, Los Angeles Business Journal and KTTV FOX 11.

The media managers also visited National Association of Broadcasters (NAB), The Pew Research Center, American Association of Advertising Agencies, MDB Communications, Inc., the U.S. Senate Press Gallery, among other organizations.

Both programs were sponsored by the US Embassy in Belgrade.
