Juan Manuel Casanueva

Mexico: Connecting Coders to Journalists

ICFJ Knight Fellow Juan Manuel Casanueva helped media and civil society organizations, as well as concerned citizens, to develop and expand the use of news technologies created by teams across the world and improve access to quality information.

As a Knight Fellow, Casanueva worked to:

  • Design and build a series of flagship data-driven media projects.

  • Lead the creation and promotion of a Citizen Engagement Lab.

  • Build and strengthen networks (such as Hacks/Hackers) to establish closer ties and collaborations between the news technology and open government communities in Mexico and other Latin American countries.

  • Embed Data Fellows into newsrooms in the region to help media organizations to build technology capacities and develop data-driven journalism projects.

  • Organize events that build skills, teams and new uses of technology.
