Central Asian Print Media Trainers Get Seminar in Almaty

Publishers and editors from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan will take part
in a seminar to help them learn how to train their colleagues in management. The
seminar is scheduled for April 10 to 14 in Almaty. ICFJ and Internews Kazakhstan are organizing the seminar.
Russian Independent Print Media Program (RIPMP)

ICFJ is working with the Eurasia Foundation in an effort to prepare native media trainers for Russia in management, sales and editorial operations. The program aims to provide assistance in development projects that will target individual newspaper staffs. ICFJ will send five trainers.
Central Asia Media and Information Initiative II

ICFJ is partnering with the Internews Network in an effort to prepare a corps of native trainers in Central Asia who will continue to meet the media development needs of the region beyond the life of the program. Part of the U.S. Agency for International Development’s Central Asia Media and Information Initiative, the program also hopes to produce and distribute literature in Kazakh, Kyrgyz, Russian, Tajik and Uzbek on journalism training and media management.
Media Development in Bosnia

ICFJ is working with Chemonics International to perform a three-year media program in Bosnia and Herzegovina for the U.S. Agency for International Development with the goal of further developing the independent media in that region.
Workshop Emphasizes Political and Election Coverage in Ukraine

This 5-day workshop ran from Feb. 6-10 in Kiev and worked with 30 print and broadcast reporters to improve their coverage of the country's upcoming parliamentary ballot, the first since last year's Orange Revolution. The program emphasized internationally accepted standards of reporting to enable journalists to pursue the public interest more effectively; it also stressed the importance of objectivity and fairness, the primary tools of a reporter's credibility.
2006 Media Training Program for Media Professionals from the Balkans
January - April 2006
A U.S.-based professional development program for 20 journalists from the Balkan region held January to April 2006, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State. The goal is to strengthen skills and help journalists and managers cope with government, business and audience pressures that combine to discourage the healthy development of free, independent and economically viable media.
The Arthur F. Burns Fellowship Program
Annual fellowship
A two-month (August-September) working fellowship for young German and American print and broadcast journalists. Ten participants from each country work at counterpart news organizations. Travel expenses and a stipend are provided. Funded by private-sector grants. Applicants should be working journalists in any news media with demonstrated journalistic talent and an interest in U.S.-European affairs.

Central Asia Media and Information Initiative

This program will conduct professional skills journalism and management training for media professionals from print publications and news agencies in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan. The training will be aimed at helping journalists, editors and managers navigate the difficult terrain they face in their region. The focus will be on helping the media gain credibility with the public, despite the hurdles of state control and weak economies.
Media Excellence Program for Belarus
September 1, 2004 - August 31, 2005
A three-phase program for journalists and media managers from Belarus. Eight participants participated in a 28-day program in the U.S. in February 2005. Twelve colleagues will join them in Warsaw in May for a week of seminars, hands-on training and study of the successes of Poland's independent media. ICFJ trainers will accompany the participants back to Belarus for individual consultations in their own newsrooms and offices.
2004 Training Program for Media Professionals from the Balkans

This is a United States based program to conduct a professional development training for 19 journalists from different Balkan countries, which includes workshops, appointments and media attachments. The program included both English speaking abd non-English speaking participants. Separate training sessions and attachments were set up for the two groups.
Media Training Program on Trafficking in Women and Girls in Southeastern Europe
August 1, 2002 - February 1, 2004
This project includes three workshops in three Balkan countries for participants from Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Kosovo, Macedonia, Romania and Serbia-Montenegro. Each workshop will be followed by several weeks of faculty consultancies. The project will end with a final seminar bringing together the best participants from the first three workshops. The first workshop took place on March 12-15 in Skopje, Macedonia; the second one in Sarejevo, Bosnia-Herzegovina on May 28-31; the third in Sofia, Bulgaria on September 10-13. The final seminar will be held in Opatija, Croatia on December 3-6.
