USAID Visitor Tours Maubisse Media House and Radio Station
Dili, Timor-Leste: 25 July 2010 - Dr. Frank Young, the highest ranking USAID official ever to visit Timor-Leste, toured ICFJ’s Media House and Community Radio Station in Maubisse on Sunday, July 25.
Frank Young, senior deputy assistant administrator for USAID's Asia Bureau, was interviewed live on Community Radio Maubisse Mauloko. He said it brought back memories of his college days when he worked at his school’s campus radio station. Before taking to the airwaves, Dr. Young was briefed about ICFJ’s program in Timor-Leste by country director Chuck Rice.
The Regional Media House in Maubisse and the Community Radio Station 'Radio Maubisse Mauloko' were formally opened on June 4th, 2010. Frank Young (USAID Asia Bureau - center), Mark White (USAID Timor-Leste - right) and Chuck Rice (ICFJ Country Director - left) at the UMR Maubisse.
The UMR (Regional Media House) Maubisse is the sixth media house established by the ICFJ team in East Timor, as part of the USAID / AusAID-funded SIMPTL media assistance project in that country. The other five UMRs are located in Dili, Baucau, Ermera, Suai and in the enclave of Oecusse.
Media Houses are designed to generally increase the flow of news and information between the capital, Dili, and the districts; they enable local and district journalists to file copy to media outlets in Dili; and they are intensively used for training purposes.
Journalists have free access to all the technical facilities at the UMRs. However, the media houses also serve the wider local communities: through the attached internet cafes, local residents are provided with internet access - often for the very first time.
