Online Video for Citizen Journalists in Malaysia

Watch trainee Christine Chan, who ventured into the Thaipusam festival to seek answers on Malaysia religious tolerance.
The Online Video for Citizen Journalists in Malaysia program is a three month intensive training for citizen journalists. Throughout the course, journalists produced and disseminated online news videos about Malaysia’s several religious and ethnic communities through the prism of coverage of human rights, religious and ethnic tolerance issues.

Hands-on workshops were held that
focused on reporting skills and the production of video news content
. The workshops aim was to equip journalists with the knowledge, technical skills and networks necessary for them to address issues of importance.

Courses included:
  • Citizen Journalism
  • Scriptwriting for Documentaries
  • Video Editing
  • Video Camera
The best of participants’ news videos are distributed through Malaysiakini, an independent Malaysian news Web site. The program also will use innovative new-media methods defined by the partner through two pilot projects to distribute the videos.

Highlights from the Program

Watch featured videos produced by participants and read special reports written by participants that focused on ethics and human rights issues.
