Leading TV station in Panama launches “Yo Informo” to engage voters in election coverage

A new project in Panama is calling on the public to help cover the country's May 4 national elections.

During the campaign, Televisora Nacional (TVN-Channel 2), a leading Panamanian TV station, is using its crowdsourcing platform, called “Yo Informo” (“I Inform”) to surface citizens’ top concerns.

On Election Day, it will use the platform to monitor the polls and ask voters to help spot any election irregularities that may arise.

El Centro Internacional para Periodistas (ICFJ) en Washington en alianza con CONNECTAS y el Centro Latinoamericano de Periodismo (CELAP) invitaron a jóvenes y miembros de la sociedad civil a dos talleres de participación ciudadana en ciudad de Colón, Panamá, que se llevó a cabo desde el 20 al 22 de marzo. La capacitación se centró en los fundamentos del reporte ciudadano, el proceso electoral en Panamá y herramientas digitales y en línea para fomentar la participación política más allá del sufragio.

Mobile phones are becoming essential tools for journalists, who use them for interviews, contacting editors and sources, taking photographs and storing important files related to their stories. The devices’ small size, light weight, power and flexibility mean that they rival desktop or laptop computers in utility.

But the features that make a reporter’s phone such a useful tool can also make it an attractive target to governments, hackers and criminals.
