en Español: Taller en Uruapan sobre Conservación de Bosques Mexicanos
ICFJ held the first workshop in Uruapan, Michoacán Nov. 13-16,
2002. The program featured a field trip to ejido San Juan Nuevo
Parangaricutiro, which operates profitable forest-management and
furniture-making businesses that have been certified as sustainable
by Smartwood. Participants saw erosion pouring into Lake Pátzcuaro,
a site of long-term deforestation.
The workshop featured a preview of a new report sponsored by the
Ford Foundation on forestry in Mexico, with a case study on the
success of community forestry in Balcón, in Guerrero State.
Speakers included leaders from universities, NGOs, government
agencies, journalism and local communities. Leading consultants
included:

Journalism to Raise Environmental Awareness, Aguascaliente,
Mexico
20 Mexican journalists were selected from applicants such as
reporters, producers and editors. All travel and living expenses
were paid by the program.
