Uruapan Workshop on Mexican Forest Conservation
en Español: Taller en Uruapan sobre Conservación de Bosques Mexicanos

ICFJ held the first workshop in Uruapan, Michoacán Nov. 13-16, 2002. The program featured a field trip to ejido San Juan Nuevo Parangaricutiro, which operates profitable forest-management and furniture-making businesses that have been certified as sustainable by Smartwood. Participants saw erosion pouring into Lake Pátzcuaro, a site of long-term deforestation.

The workshop featured a preview of a new report sponsored by the Ford Foundation on forestry in Mexico, with a case study on the success of community forestry in Balcón, in Guerrero State.

Speakers included leaders from universities, NGOs, government agencies, journalism and local communities. Leading consultants included:

  • Leticia Merino
    National Autonomous University of Mexico
  • David Bray
Chair and associate professor, Department of Environmental Studies, Florida International University
  • Talli Nauman
Journalism to Raise Environmental Awareness, Aguascaliente, Mexico
20 Mexican journalists were selected from applicants such as reporters, producers and editors. All travel and living expenses were paid by the program.
