Jamaicans face difficulty getting visas to work in the United States. Sarah Shemkus and photographer Paul Blackmore traveled to Jamaica to investigate the impact of this obstacle on Jamaican families and their would be employers on Cape Cod.
Shemkus covers issues including tourism, labor, insurance and real estate for the Cape Cod Times. She has also completed stints as a correspondent for the New Hampshire Union Leader and Washington correspondent for the New Bedford Standard-Times.
A native of Massachusetts, Shemkus graduated from Bowdoin College in 1999 with a degree in English, and continued to study creative writing in the years that followed, before pursuing a graduate degree in journalism at Boston University.
