Balkans: Tracking Cross-Border Corruption

ICFJ Knight Fellow Paul Radu, co-founder of the Romanian Center for Investigative Journalism, developed a comprehensive database and guide for journalists to investigate and expose corruption in the Balkans and Eastern Europe. He also trained scores of reporters to use these new tools to break stories.

As a Fellow, Radu:

  • Distributed the online manual, “Follow the Money – A Digital Guide to Tracking Corruption,” across Europe.
  • Helped journalists use the manual and accompanying database to break stories on organized crime's influence on soccer in Romania, France and Brazil.
  • Created a comprehensive database that tracks corporations and their links to governments in the region.
  • Helped start investigative journalism centers in Hungary and Kosovo.
