As the ICFJ Knight Fellowships Deputy Director, Sara Olstad helps oversee Fellows’ projects to instill a culture of news innovation and improve people’s lives through cutting-edge journalism in Latin America and South Asia. This includes: goal setting and monitoring progress; building newsroom partnerships in the U.S. and abroad; and communicating the Fellows’ achievements to key audiences.
Olstad previously worked as an editor at Trove (formerly Washington Post Labs), a news aggregator startup, where she focused on social media, analytics and project management. She has experience writing for local media outlets and served as a communications consultant for two education NGOs in Peru.
These experiences fueled her belief that outstanding journalism has the power to change lives. She joined ICFJ in February 2016 to help further this mission.
Olstad graduated summa cum laude from Northwestern University with a bachelor’s degree in journalism and Spanish and studied Latin American culture and history at the Peru’s Pontifical Catholic University. She is originally from Minnesota.
