  • Despite Danger and Tremendous Hardship, Syrian Photojournalist Karam al-Masri Kept Reporting

    11/10/2017

ICFJ's 2017 Knight International Journalism Award Winner Karam al-Masri is a Syrian photographer and videojournalist. He persisted in capturing heartbreaking images of his country during its civil war, despite tremendous hardship, intimidation and abuse. Al-Masri was a law student in his hometown of Aleppo who started out taking mobile telephone photos of anti-regime demonstrations. Soon he bought a professional camera, and in 2013 he became a freelance photographer for the AFP. His photographs of war victims inspired offers of help from Syria and abroad. In the end, al-Masri remained as one of the few sources of news left in his city.
