Kenyan Health Reporter Wins Inaugural Award in Honor of Michael Elliott

Mercy Juma, a Kenyan broadcast journalist whose stories shed light on sensitive topics, such as unwed teen mothers living in Muslim communities, has been named winner of the inaugural Michael Elliott Award for Excellence in African Storytelling. A distinguished jury selected her from among 354 applicants for this prize.

The prestigious award is given by the International Center for Journalists (ICFJ) in partnership with ONE and the Elliott family.

Prize-Winning Photojournalist: For Great Pictures, Try Planning and Patience

Nikki Kahn, an award-winning photojournalist and former Washington Post staffer, recently offered tips for great visual storytelling to a group of African journalists at a Code for Africa story camp in Zanzibar.

Kahn is the first recipient of the Michel du Cille Fellowship, created in honor of the Pulitzer Prize-winning Washington Post photographer who died in Liberia in 2014 while covering the Ebola outbreak.

InnovateAFRICA: Digital Fact-checking and Watchdog Projects Win $1 Million

A pan-African fact-checking network, citizen science in Durban shantytowns and a graphic journalism hub are among the latest winners of seed grants from innovateAFRICA, the continent’s largest fund for digital journalism experimentation.

The 22 winning digital projects will receive $1 million in funding and technology support from innovateAFRICA, which is managed by Code for Africa as part of ICFJ's wider data journalism initiative in the region.
