Filipe Speck

Filipe Speck is a Brazilian journalist, researcher, professor and entrepreneur. With over a decade of experience in the field of digital news products, he is dedicated to studying the impact of journalism on the quality of local democracies.

Speck is co-founder and current CEO of Matinal, which is a prominent local newsroom based in Porto Alegre, Brazil. Established in 2019, Matinal has gained recognition for its exceptional investigative journalism, making it one of the most acclaimed newsrooms in its field. Furthermore, the organization has been acknowledged for its innovative products and has received grants from Google, Meta, and ICFJ.

Speck also produces "Noites Gregas," a Brazilian podcast that discusses Greek mythology. Prior to founding Matinal, he spent four years at Grupo RBS in a variety of leadership positions across departments, such as news, sales, marketing and technology. Speck holds a master's degree in production engineering, with his research focusing on business models related to journalism, such as the viability of paid journalistic content.
