Giulia Afiune

Giulia Afiune is a Brazilian journalist working at the intersection of investigative reporting, digital strategy and audience engagement. She is currently an audience editor at Agencia Publica, an investigative journalism nonprofit, where she leads the news organization's membership program. She has also acted as lead editor in engagement reporting projects, such as a comprehensive mapping of political violence cases in two election cycles in Brazil and an investigation about the distribution of ineffective Covid-19 treatment kits by government officials seeking reelection.

She has previously worked as an investigative reporter for Agencia Publica in Sao Paulo, Brazil, and for The Texas Tribune in Austin, Texas. Afiune has investigated issues related to politics, housing, sports, immigration and human rights in the United States and Brazil, and her stories have also been published by news organizations such as WGBH, The GroundTruth Project, ICIJ, PRI's The World, Folha de S. Paulo, Band News TV and UOL.

Afiune has contributed to several award-winning journalism projects, including the Oscar-nominated Netflix documentary "The Edge of Democracy", in which she was a researcher and sole fact-checker.  

She holds a Master of Arts degree in Media Innovation from Northeastern University, in Boston. As an ICFJ fellow, she is interested in developing innovative news products that effectively address audience needs and help fund quality journalism in today's challenging and ever changing media landscape.
