Covering Community Forest Management

A workshop for Mexican Journalists

Oaxaca, Mexico, April 3-6, 2008

The International Center for Journalists (ICFJ) held a workshop on covering community forestry and forest conservation. Applications were welcomed from Mexican journalists who wished to sharpen their skills for reporting on communal forest management. Approximately 80 percent of Mexico’s forests are managed by communities, mostly called “ejidos.” Researcher David Bray has described these as potentially global models for sustainable management of tropical forest lands.

The International Center for Journalists (ICFJ) has named reporters from India, Kenya and Nigeria as winners of the 2016 Early Childhood Development Reporting Contest. Their stories shed light on the earliest years of life, especially the first 1,000 days. That is the critical period when children need proper nourishment, responsive care, learning opportunities and protection from disease, violence and stress.

To carry forward Hoge's legacy and his passion for journalistic integrity, ICFJ launched the Jim Hoge Legacy Fund. Through three-month reporting fellowships, the Fund supports rising news leaders at home and abroad, helping the next generation of journalists safely and effectively report on pressing global issues, from disinformation to climate change to rising authoritarianism.
