Fallen Hero
Afghanistan, 2007

To document the conflict in Afghanistan for The New York Times in 2007, Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist Lynsey Addario embedded with U.S. troops in the Korengal Valley. In one of the most dangerous areas in the country, soldiers searched caves for weapon caches and known leaders opposing the U.S.-led coalition. One day, the Taliban ambushed a scout team, standing guard at the furthest tip of a ridge, killing Sgt. Larry Rougle and wounding two others. An hour later, Addario captured this photo of the platoon carrying Rougle’s body to a helicopter to be sent home. The incident was depicted in an award-winning National Geographic documentary in 2010, “Restrepo.” A caption and signature from Addario is located on the back of the print.
Addario’s work has appeared regularly in The New York Times, National Geographic and Time magazine. American Photo magazine named her as one of the five most influential photographers of the past 25 years in 2014. She was part of a New York Times reporting team that won the 2009 Pulitzer Prize for International Reporting for its coverage of America’s military and political challenges in Afghanistan and Pakistan. While Addario was on assignment for the Times in 2011, Libyan soldiers captured her and three other journalists and held them hostage for six grueling days. Her newly published memoir, “It’s What I Do: A Photographer’s Life of Love and War,” will be made into a movie starring Jennifer Lawrence and directed by Steven Spielberg.
