How Journalists in the ICFJ Network Are Teaming Up to Expose Corruption

At a recent anti-corruption gathering in Washington, DC, Samantha Power, who heads the U.S. Agency for International Development, highlighted a powerful tool developed by ICFJ on a USAID-funded program. With our partner, the Jefferson Institute, we created a platform called Secure Reporter, which helps journalists conducting sensitive and often dangerous investigations collaborate more safely across borders.

Fighting Disinformation in the U.S. and Beyond

At ICFJ, we have long worked to help journalists fight the scourge of rampant disinformation in countries from Brazil to India to Nigeria. The prevalence of falsehoods during the recent U.S. midterm elections is the latest reminder why that work is just as vital in our own backyard.

We have responded to the need with programs to fight the tide of disinformation in U.S. Spanish-speaking audiences and to amplify trustworthy sources in coverage of everything from the New Mexico governor’s race to Tuesday’s Georgia Senate runoff.

Disarming Disinformation: Apply Now for the 'Investigathon'

ICFJ’s Disarming Disinformation program has a robust track designed to promote collaborative investigations that help to unravel who or what funds disinformation in the Americas. 

Very soon you will be able to apply for the second stage, an in-person “Investigathon,” which will take place in Austin, Texas, April 11-15. The event will bring together 20 professionals who will present proposals for collaborative investigations with a high potential for impact. 

Security Guidance for Journalists on the U.S.-Mexico Border

After several attacks against Mexican journalists throughout 2022, the International Center for Journalists (ICFJ) and the Border Center for Journalists and Bloggers collaborated with USAID-Mexico to develop security recommendations and guidance for journalists working on the U.S.-Mexico border.

Journalists Highlight Violence Against Children Around the Globe

Winners of the 2022 International Center for Journalists (ICFJ) Violence Against Children Reporting Contest shone a light on sexual abuse of children by priests in Colombia, corporal punishment in Kenya, and child sex trafficking on the internet in the Philippines.

The Violence Against Children Reporting Contest was part of a partnership between ICFJ and the World Health Organization (WHO) designed to increase the quality and quantity of news coverage on violence against children around the world.

How a Reporting Network at the U.S.-Mexico Border is Helping Reduce Corruption

In 2009, a fire at a nursery school in Hermosillo, Mexico, claimed the lives of 49 children and injured more than 40 others. In response, the Mexican government dedicated millions of dollars to helping the victims and their families. But that money seemed to disappear before it reached them. 

That is, until investigative reporter Alan Aviña asked the right questions. His investigation revealed that a state official had hired family members to assist her in stealing about $500,000 from the government’s response to the fire. The impact: Mexico’s Institute of Social Services (IMSS) barred the corrupt official from holding public office for the next 12 years. 

To bring that corruption to light, Aviña used skills he had learned as a participant in the Mexico Border Investigative Reporting Hub (the Border Hub). ICFJ runs the five-year program in partnership with the Border Center for Journalists and Bloggers with support from USAID.

IJNet Arabic's 2022 - 23 Mentoring Center Participants Are Driving Media Innovation in the MENA region

This year’s 2022-23 mentees — based in Egypt, Jordan, Iraq, Tunisia and Yemen — will receive mentorship on sustainable growth and innovation strategies, as well as advice on how to seek new sources of revenue to support their work. Throughout this 10-month program, the mentees will also learn how to strategize, develop and present content that meets the needs of their respective audiences, and advance effective marketing plans.
