The Douglas Tweedale Memorial Fellowship is a unique opportunity for two Latin American journalists or newsroom managers to develop expertise in the practical and ethical use of artificial intelligence (AI) in journalism. With AI rapidly transforming how news can be created, shared and consumed, this fellowship aims to ensure Latin American media professionals are equipped to navigate these changes responsibly. The fellowship includes training sessions, U.S. newsroom placements and hands-on experience with cutting-edge AI tools. Participants will also learn to combat digital disinformation and better understand the role of AI in verifying content and improving news production.

The program will unfold in five structured phases, beginning with a Spanish-language webinar open to all journalists in the region, aimed at raising awareness about AI’s role in the newsroom. This will be followed by a competitive selection process where applicants must demonstrate English proficiency, a commitment to independent journalism and an interest in AI. Selected fellows will travel to Washington D.C. for a three-day orientation featuring expert-led training, site visit, and managerial workshops. They will then take part in three-week placements at leading U.S. news organizations known for innovation in AI and journalism. During these placements, fellows will gain direct exposure to AI-driven editorial practices and build international networks with experienced professionals.
After returning to their home countries, each fellow will be required to publish a story related to AI or disinformation, applying what they learned during their placements. In a continued effort to support media development, the program fosters long-term engagement through alumni involvement in governance and virtual networking. Alumni may be invited to join the program’s advisory board or participate in online convenings with peers from previous cohorts.
