Techies + scientists + journalists = a science "data quest"

Code for South Africa hosted its first ever science-themed Data Quest last week in Cape Town, in partnership with science journalism nonprofit SciBraai and ICFJ. Teams of scientists, techies and journalists developed data visualizations and stories from publicly available data. Poderopedia focuses on “bigger, better, bolder”

“The owners of censorship in Venezuela,” a joint project of Poderopedia Venezuela, IPYS Venezuela and ArmandoInfo, was nominated for the the Gabriel García Márquez Journalism Awards. Poderopedia reveals connections between powerful figures in business and politics. ICFJ Knight Fellow Miguel Paz began the project in Chile and it's expanded to Venezuela and Colombia. Chicas Poderosas in Rio

Chicas Poderosas, founded by recent ICFJ Knight Fellow Mariana Santos during her fellowship, held its first hackathon in Brazil. The hackathon focused on creating infographics for the 2016 Olympics & Paralympics Committee in Rio de Janeiro. Check out this Storify for more details.

InfoAmazonia heads to the Congo

InfoCongo, an initiative of Internews’ Earth Journalism Network (EJN), launched a new geojournalism website that uses interactive maps and data to shed light on natural resource issues in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. This new data journalism project is a south-south innovation based on InfoAmazonia, which was created during Gustavo Faleiros’ ICFJ Knight Fellowship.
