ICFJ’s Patrick Butler led a fascinating session on the future of investigative journalism at Global Forum for Media Development’s major gathering in Indonesia this week. The importance of collaboration in an era of scarce funding and unprecedented dangers was a key topic. Panelists included Knight International Journalism Award Winner Miranda Patrucic, who is Regional Editor at the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP), among other leaders in the field. A Filipino court has acquitted Nobel Peace Prize laureate and Rappler CEO Maria Ressa, along with five Rappler directors, in a long-standing anti-dummy case. Filed in 2018 under the administration of former President Rodrigo Duterte, the case was based on the allegation that Rappler had violated constitutional restrictions on foreign ownership of media.
